Whether you're making your Halloween party appearance as the bride of Frankenstein or a cute little bunny, your costume won't be complete without a bit of special-effect makeup. And though dressing up is a lot of fun, dealing with face-painting products can be daunting. We asked celebrity makeup artist Tyrone Traylor to give us a few foolproof tips to help make your fright-night face a success!

  • The day before you plan to wear your costume, make sure to do a patch test of the face paint you'll be using. These heavy-duty cosmetics are much higher in pigment than regular cosmetics and can cause a reaction on sensitive skin. Apply a small amount of the makeup to the inside fold of your arm and leave on for at least a half hour to make sure there is no adverse reaction.
  • If you plan to paint your entire face, a foundation primer can be your best friend. These lightweight pre-makeup products create a barrier between your skin and the makeup to help prevent staining.
  • Painting your face one color can be tricky. Greasepaint is called that for a reason; it's very oily and can be difficult to work with. Tyrone recommends applying the color with your fingers and using a tapping motion to blend.
