Some trends are fleeting while others become instant classics. This summer season, my staples are a pair (or two) of Navajo sandals, tunics and Bermuda shorts. In honor of fashion trends that never go away, let's look at the origins of these favorite classics:

To Tunic or Not to Tunic

by by Boni Joi

Talk about trends that go way back. The tunic was worn in ancient Greece and Rome as an undergarment. That version was knee length and originally made from wool or unadorned linen. Any ornamentation would indicate the wearer's status in the community. The tunics (also referred to as kurtas) that are currently popular are the Indian and Pakistani versions, made from cotton or silk. Tunics remain eternal because of their ethereal look and feel, not to mention that they exude glamour and look good on any woman, any size. Calypso carries many styles, but my favorites are the Zeena Kurta and the Ava Long Kurta. I wear my kurta as a beach cover-up, then into cocktail hour with a camisole, a pair of cropped jeans and metallic sandals.
Price: Zeena Kurta in peach, $70; Ava Long Kurta in orchid, $85
